  • Unlike Zac Efron himself, U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Simone Biles remembers High School Musical. She’s been crushing on Efron for years. Efron heard about this and freaking flew out to Rio to meet her, proving that dreams really do come true.

What’s the bigger deal: getting to meet your celebrity crush, or getting to meet one of the greatest gymnasts of all time? I can’t say. But as our host Anna Lore lays out in the video above, this meeting of two of the most popular Americans right now damn near caused everyone to lose their minds.

First, a timeline. Biles has been tweeting about her adoration of Zac Efron since at least 2013:

  • She even got a life-size cutout of him for Christmas in 2014:

  • The world came to know of Biles’ crush through this segment on Ellen, in which DeGeneres gives Biles a leotard covered in pictures of Efron:

  • Efron caught wind and tweeted a good luck message to Biles, who immediately responded:

  • Then, on the Today Show, Biles called out Efron to come visit the team in Rio:

  • Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it to the actual final event. But he still flew out to Rio! Biles finally got her precious photo-op — and a kiss!:

  • Now, Efron has a girlfriend, and Biles is only 19. Plus, any relationship built on what started as a teenage adoration probably wouldn’t go well. But look at how cute they are together! Whether they stay friends or not barely matters. At least we finally got a truly adorable story out of these troubled Olympics.

What do you think? Is this the best story to come out of Rio, or are you focused on things like “actual sports” or “people getting robbed at gunpoint”? Let us know in the comments below or @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
