Uber CEO Caught Arguing With His Own Driver

Working for a company as expansive as Uber, I’m sure employees sometime imagine meeting the head honcho of the company. Uber Black driver, Fawzi Kamel, got just that experience, but I’m sure it was not at all what he expected.

In a video released, Uber CEO, Travis Kalanick, is perched in the middle seat of his Uber Black alongside two female friends. The three engage in some small talk, and all seems to be going well. Once they reach their destination, however, a comment by Fawzi ignites an argument with Kalanick regarding falling fares.

Following the incident, Kamel released the video to Bloomberg stirring public opinion regarding the CEO’s behavior.

Kalanick sent the following apology to Uber employees Tuesday evening:

By now I’m sure you’ve seen the video where I treated an Uber driver disrespectfully. To say that I am ashamed is an extreme understatement. My job as your leader is to lead… and that starts with behaving in a way that makes us all proud. That is not what I did, and it cannot be explained away.

It’s clear this video is a reflection of me – and the criticism we’ve received is a stark reminder that I must fundamentally change as a leader and grow up. This is the first time I’ve been willing to admit that I need leadership help and I intend to get it.

I want to profoundly apologize to Fawzi, as well as the driver and rider community, and to the Uber team.

The bad press against Uber just continues to mount. In December of 2016, Uber illegally put self-driving car on the roads of San Francisco, and during the New York Taxi union strike, Uber didn’t skip a beat… using it as a business opportunity to snag customers.
