Why Are Women in India Sharing #AintNoCinderella Selfies?

Women across India are posting selfies taken after midnight to protest a politician who suggested that women should not be allowed to go out at night unattended.

The protest began with a stalking case in northern India that’s blowing up into a huge political scandal. Last week, a 29-year-old woman in Chandigarh called the police to complain about an SUV following her. The SUV continued chasing her, forced her onto smaller roads. Some passengers even got out of the SUV and attempted to get into the young woman’s car.

One of the young men involved in the stalking case is the son of a prominent Indian politician and some of the politician’s party members are trying to shift blame to the victim in the stalking attack.

A party vice president said of the attack, “The girl should not have gone out at 12 in the night. Why was she driving so late in the night? The atmosphere is not right.” He continued, “parents should take care of their daughters. They should not be allowed to roam out of the house late in the night. They should come back home on time.”

This quote angered a lot of women in India because the victim in the stalking case is 28 years old! Not a child! In response, Indian women are positing selfies after midnight with the hashtag #AintNoCinderella, and a search of the hashtag shows a lot of women standing up to this politician and defend their own independence and a right to their safety.
