  • Physicists from CERN near Geneva, Switzerland and Gran Sasso in Italy seem confident they have recorded subatomic particles, called neutrinos, traveling faster than the speed of light.

  • If their assertion were confirmed, it would unhinge Albert Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity, which states that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light because it is a “cosmic constant.” The speed of light is a cornerstone of our understanding of time and space. The results this experiment could alter the basic foundation of causality, which states that cause comes before effect.

According to their data, over three years the neutrinos that have been sent from Switzerland to Italy have arrived 60 nanoseconds faster than light would have. The international team of scientists claims they have double-checked their work and have offered their findings to colleagues for review.

The mood online seems to be one of excitement and wit.
