Actress and television host Drew Barrymore turns 48 years old today. Her career in Hollywood began when she was a child and appeared in several films, including E.T. and Firestarter.  She went on to have a long and successful career, appearing in over 50 horror, romantic comedy, and drama films, notably Scream50 First Dates, Donnie Darko, He’s Just Not That Into You and numerous others. In 2020, Barrymore embarked on a new venture–a talk show. The Drew Barrymore Show features lifestyle segments and interviews with celebrity guests and digital creators.

Barrymore has been open about her struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues. She was a regular at clubs in Hollywood as a child and young teen, and landed in a rehabilitation center at 14. Her TV show offers an empathetic look into the lives of some of Hollywood’s up-and-coming talent, and others who have been in the business longer.

In honor of her 48th birthday today, actor Penn Badgley, who currently stars in Netflix’s You, collaborated with the production team and planned a humorously creepy surprise that paid homage to his hit show. Badgley’s character Joe Goldberg locks his victims in a glass box meant to preserve old books, and today, Barrymore was blindfolded and surprised by her own box.

Badgley sat down for an insightful interview with Barrymore after the surprise at the start of the show. The pair discussed their romantic journeys in the spotlight, and how Badgley really views love, given his portrayal of an obsessive lover in You.

The Drew Barrymore Show has rapidly become a success in the world of television, with countless interview clips going viral across social media. Barrymore offers an interesting perspective when it comes to interviewing celebrities, as she went through similar experiences to many of the guests she’s had on her show. Today, some of her guests and fellow actors share memories from the set in honor of Barrymore’s special day.

Kelly has been outspoken regarding his anxiety and history of addiction. As Barrymore endured similar struggles at a young age, she was able to calm his nerves and have a powerful conversation with him. To balance out the serious elements of the show, Barrymore has also hosted guests who dish about their dating lives. Jennifer Grey, famously of Dirty Dancing, revealed on the show that she was engaged to actors Matthew Broderick and Johnny Depp in the same month many years ago. Fans of the show loved seeing the two actresses talk about the details, with one commenter saying that “this is the energy that female friendships need.”
