TikTok creator Montaine frequently posts videos offering advice about deciphering clues about crushes and relationships. A recent video of his describes what much of the internet has dubbed the ultimate test–telling a person you’re interested in that you’re thinking of buzzing your hair.
The video stands at over eight million views, with countless other TikTok creators duetting the video and sharing their experiences with boyfriends who buzzed their hair.

While the test’s results were largely corroborated by viewers on the platform, some commenters disagreed. One viewer wrote that “as a girl I disagree with this test.” Others realized that Montaine’s advice had been there all along, with one commenter writing “have I…been tested?”
TikTok creator Gabby DePietro duetted Montaine’s video and shared her own experience. While the test may work on single people, she felt it had a different effect because she was already in a relationship with her boyfriend when he shaved his head in secret. “If you didn’t get her permission and she stays with you? Then she’s in love,” said DePietro.

It’s likely this whole phenomenon was born out of singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes shaving his head, after years of being known for his signature luscious locks. The buzzcut was heard around the world.

More than just a change in physical appearance, many TikTok creators shaved their heads to provoke self reflection and healing. Some cultures believe that hair holds trauma, and that cutting it off allows one to move past some of the hardest times of their lives.

Regardless of whether Montaine’s test works, some users pointed out that hair grows back, and at the end of the day, a buzzcut is a personal choice, and the right person will love your locks no matter the length.
