Somebody in your comment section is getting called a larper right now. It might be a streamer who suddenly discovered vinyl, or a lifestyle creator whose kitchen looks a little too staged for a Tuesday afternoon.

The word used to belong to people in foam armor. LARP stands for live action role play, a hobby that grew out of tabletop gaming in the 1970s, where fans dress up and act out characters at organized events. Somewhere in the last few years the lowercase version broke loose from the hobby and turned into a weapon.

Mashable’s Crystal Bell described it this week as the successor to “poser,” which is close, though larper lands harder. Poser accused you of buying the wrong shoes. Larper accuses you of building a whole self out of nothing.

Urban Dictionary’s top entry describes a larper as someone attempting something well beyond their ability while fully believing they can pull it off. On TikTok and X, the charge has stretched to cover almost anything. You can larp a fandom, a career, a hometown, a net worth.

The creator economy runs on the belief that the person on camera is a real person, and larping goes straight at that belief. A sponsorship is a bet on trust. A comment section that decides you’re playing a character is a comment section that stops converting.

Somewhere in the pile-on, the insult became a genre. Larping has tutorials now. Search the word on TikTok and you’ll find explainers on the etymology, hobbyists running survival guides on armor and character rules, and a steady feed of people demonstrating the bit instead of denying it.

The 2026 World Cup made it official. The Tab reported that viewers spent the tournament admitting they were larping it, absorbing the whole thing through clips without watching a match. Confessing to the performance became the performance.
