How A.I. Ran Rampant on the Met Gala with Stars Like Katy Perry and MOre

While some our favorite celebrities didn’t make it to the Met Gala last night, that didn’t stop enterprising fans with access to A.I. to generate some carpet looks for people like Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.

This morning, Katy Perry posted a carousel on Instagram with the caption “couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work.” The first image is an A.I.-generated photo of the singer in a large floral ballgown adorned with butterflies and grass trim. The second is a different image showing the singer with wet hair and a bronze key corset with grassy floral mini-skirt. Perry has stunned at the Met Gall before in extravagant looks, so it’s not surprising that fans awaiting her appearance probably fell for it.

Katy Perry’s own mother thought so! Further along in the carousel a screenshot of a text message exchange between the American Idol judge and her mother starts off with Perry’s mother saying, “Ha Feather! Didn’t know you went to the Met 💥💥💥 What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol” and sending a picture of the ballgown image. Perry responds, “lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!”

With the rate at how fast fans and outlets post pictures of their favorites on X (formerly known as Twitter) during big carpet events, it’s easy to get swept up in sudden appearances or lowkey “whoa, they were there?” posts.

A fan posted an A.I. image showing Rihanna with a involved top with a huge collar stand evocative of a tree with embroidered birds on branches and a long grassy train. Annoyed fans in the X post’s comments chastised the poster for “ruining” her actual outfit reveal, since Rihanna famously arrives to the Met Gala fashionably late (which spoiler, never happened). According to People, Rihanna was set to appear at the Gala and had an outfit decided, but caught a flu last-minute. We may never know what Rihanna was going to wear to match the theme “The Garden of Time”, so at least we have this image to ponder.

Another fan imagined Lady Gaga’s look, which seems to borrow a lot from the architecture of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Lady Gaga hasn’t attended the Gala since 2019

While other fans were disappointed at the celebrity no-shows, this instance of A.I. is a slippery slope go down. What could start off as a design exercise borne out of boredom quickly becomes the dangerous and harmful. Perry, among other artists, actually signed a letter calling on services and platforms to stop using A.I., which could “infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” It’s also important for consumers to be wary of A.I. practices and use discerning judgment if an image, audio, or video clip could be A.I. generated.
