Alicia Silverstone is set to return as Cher Horowitz in a sequel television series to the 1995 cult classic Clueless, currently in development at Peacock. The series aims to continue the story of the beloved Beverly Hills high schooler nearly three decades after the original film’s release.
A Star Returns to Cher
Silverstone, now 48, will not only reprise her iconic role but also serve as an executive producer for the project. She joins a team of esteemed creatives, including original Clueless writer and director Amy Heckerling, who will also executive produce. Heckerling’s involvement ensures that the series retains the sharp wit and satirical edge that made the original film a standout in teen cinema.
A New Creative Team Behind the Sequel
The series is being developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the duo behind hit shows like Gossip Girl and The O.C.. They are joined by Jordan Weiss, known for creating Dollface and writing the upcoming Freaky Friday sequel. Together, they will write and executive produce the series, bringing a fresh perspective while honoring the original’s legacy.
A Fresh Take on a Classic Story
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the series is expected to serve as a direct follow-up to the original film. This marks a departure from a previous attempt at a Clueless reboot, which centered on Dionne (originally portrayed by Stacey Dash) and was described as a mystery series exploring Cher’s disappearance. That project, announced in 2020, was ultimately shelved by Peacock in 2021.
The original Clueless, inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, became a cultural phenomenon upon its release. Silverstone’s portrayal of Cher Horowitz, a fashionable and well-meaning Beverly Hills teen, resonated with audiences and has remained a touchstone in pop culture. The film also launched the careers of several actors, including Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, and Donald Faison.
Television Adaptations and Legacy
Following the film’s success, Clueless was adapted into a television series that aired from 1996 to 1999. The show starred Rachel Blanchard as Cher and featured returning cast members Stacey Dash and Donald Faison. While the series garnered a dedicated fan base, it concluded after three seasons.
In 2023, Silverstone reprised her role as Cher in a Super Bowl commercial for Rakuten, delighting fans and rekindling interest in the character.
