Amazon Prime Video has officially announced that the highly anticipated comedy series Clean Slate will premiere on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The series, starring four-time Emmy nominee Laverne Cox and legendary comedian George Wallace, will be available to stream exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The series follows Harry (Wallace), an old-school car wash owner in Alabama, whose estranged child, Desiree (Cox), returns after 17 years—now a proud trans woman. As Harry grapples with this life-changing revelation, the two work to rebuild their relationship, navigating the challenges and comedic moments that arise from their reconnection. Clean Slate explores themes of unconditional love, family, and identity, with Norman Lear’s signature boundary-pushing humor at its core.
Clean Slate has been in development since 2021, when it was initially set up at IMDb TV. The series was greenlit by Prime Video in 2023, around Norman Lear’s 100th birthday on July 27. It was created by Cox, Wallace, and Dan Ewen, with Ewen serving as executive producer and writer. Cox and Wallace also executive produce, alongside Lear and partner Brent Miller. Ewen co-showruns the series with Simran Baidwan. The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
This marks the culmination of the show’s long journey to the screen. Initially announced as part of NBCUniversal’s 2020 development slate, Clean Slate moved to Prime Video in early 2021. The series is one of two projects Lear’s Act III Productions set up at Prime Video through their deal with Sony, with another project, Loteria—based on the iconic board game—still in development.
Cox, who made history as the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a scripted series with Orange is the New Black, is a prominent advocate for transgender rights and visibility. Her recent projects include Shonda Rhimes’ Inventing Anna and the upcoming Netflix series Uglies. Wallace, known for his Las Vegas comedy shows and numerous TV appearances, brings his comedic expertise to the role of Harry.
Joining Cox and Wallace in the cast are Telma Hopkins, D.K. Uzoukwu, Jay Wilkison, and Norah Murphy. Clean Slate is poised to deliver both heart and humor when it premieres on February 6, 2025.
