Apple CEO Tim Cook delivered a keynote presentation on the tech giant’s latest endeavors. The company notably announced a new Vision Pro Headset with augmented reality capabilities. The $35,000 headset is being dubbed “the biggest tech launch since the iPhone.” Cook stated that AR and VR are the next “great frontiers” in the tech industry. The headset will be released next year, and can be controlled through eye tracking, voice instructions, and hand movements.

Cook described the Vision Pro as “a new kind of computer that augments reality by seamlessly blending the digital world with the real world”. He additionally said it was the “first Apple product you look through, not at.” The headset is part if a greater effort to expand in the AR sphere. Cook hopes to fit the technology into glasses eventually, changing the way people can consume entertainment and perform daily tasks.

The Public Reaction

The steep price tag of the headset has many claiming that they will likely never experience AR a la Apple.

Others fear that big tech is veering towards escapism, instead of working to combat real life problems. One Twitter user likened the new headset to a “Black Mirror” episode. The Netflix show tends to tackle themes of impending dystopia.
