Apple TV built its whole reputation on originals. Ted Lasso, Severance, Silo, more than 300 productions with the Apple name on them and almost nothing licensed from anyone else. That changed quietly this week.
Apple added 19 classic movies to the U.S. Apple TV library at no extra cost for subscribers, tucked into a new carousel called “Great Movies Available Now on Apple TV” inside the app. These are titles that normally sit in the Apple TV Store as rentals or purchases, now tagged as “Just Added” and included with a subscription.
The lineup is a genuinely solid mix. Arrival, Gone Girl, Zodiac, The Sixth Sense, The Martian, Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, The Aviator, The Bourne Identity, Looper, I Robot, E.T., Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 21 Jump Street, The Proposal, Zoolander, Charlie’s Angels, Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol and The Rookie.
Worth being clear about what “free” means here. You still need an Apple TV subscription, which runs $12.99 a month or $99 a year, with a seven-day trial for new subscribers.
The offer is live in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., though the selection changes by country and the U.K. list is only six titles.
Don’t get too attached. Apple has done this before, including a batch of 51 movies two years ago, and those runs have all been temporary. The company hasn’t said how long this one lasts.
