The body of Yekaterina “Katya” Belaya, a Melbourne mother of three who vanished in 2014, was discovered in a submerged minivan last week, ending a decade-long mystery surrounding her disappearance.
Belaya, 36 at the time of her disappearance, was last seen leaving her home on the morning of Dec. 2, 2014. According to reports from Fox affiliate WOFL, CBS affiliate WKMG-TV, and NBC affiliate WESH, she had told her family she was heading to a local store but never returned. Her case remained unsolved for years, with numerous searches and leads failing to provide answers.
However, on Dec. 20, 2024, a team of sonar experts from Sunshine State Sonar made a breakthrough. The company, which specializes in locating submerged vehicles, found Belaya’s white Honda Odyssey overturned in a retention pond in Melbourne, approximately 1.6 miles from her home. The vehicle had been submerged for nearly a decade.
In a Facebook post, Sunshine State Sonar confirmed the discovery, stating, “We hope this finding can offer her loved ones some solace after years of grieving her mysterious disappearance.” The post went on to explain that the team had been alerted to the case after reading online messages posted by Belaya’s daughters, who had been searching for their mother for years.
Sonar Team’s Persistence Leads to Discovery
Mike Sullivan, the owner of Sunshine State Sonar, said his team was deeply moved by the family’s ongoing search for answers. “We received some heartbreaking messages from her daughters, and that’s what pushed us to get involved,” Sullivan told WESH. “We really wanted to help bring them some closure.”
The team began their investigation on Dec. 19, 2024, reaching out to Belaya’s family and law enforcement to gather information. Sullivan said cellphone ping data helped pinpoint the location of the minivan. Despite the many bodies of water in the area, including more than 30 that had been searched previously, they were able to locate the vehicle relatively quickly.
“I was a little surprised we were able to actually get her that quick, just because there’s probably 500 bodies of water in that area,” Sullivan said in an interview with WKMG-TV.

The vehicle was located in a retention pond near Viera Boulevard. It was upside down, with Belaya’s remains inside, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office confirmed the identity of the deceased as Belaya, offering some measure of closure to her family.
Ongoing Investigation
While the discovery has provided answers about Belaya’s fate, the investigation into her death is still ongoing. Brevard County Sheriff’s Office officials said they are continuing to examine leads and gather information about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death. “We’re running down some other leads,” said Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Tod Goodyear. “There’s a lot still to be done. But as I said, it does bring closure to the family.”
The sheriff’s office did not provide further details about any potential foul play or cause of death, and no arrests have been made in connection with Belaya’s case.
Belaya’s daughters, who have remained involved in the search for their mother over the years, expressed their gratitude to the team at Sunshine State Sonar for their help. Sullivan mentioned that the family was still processing the discovery. “I think they were still in shock,” he said.
A Family’s Decade-Long Search for Answers
For nearly 10 years, Belaya’s family had lived in uncertainty, hoping for any information that might explain her disappearance. Belaya’s daughters, now young adults, posted regularly on social media, asking for help and searching for clues. They also advocated for increased attention to the case, as many leads went cold over the years.
“We’ve been hoping for this day for so long,” one of Belaya’s daughters wrote on social media after learning of the discovery. “It’s still hard to believe, but at least we know where she is now.”

Despite the difficult emotions that come with this discovery, the family now has the answers they had longed for, even as questions remain about what happened on that fateful day in 2014.
Community Reactions and Further Search Efforts
The community has responded with an outpouring of support for Belaya’s family. Local residents and others who followed the case expressed their condolences online, with many praising Sunshine State Sonar for their persistence in finding the vehicle and providing some closure.
The discovery has also brought renewed attention to the work of private sonar and search teams, who often collaborate with law enforcement to solve cold cases. While some of the details surrounding Belaya’s disappearance remain unclear, the case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by families of missing persons.
As the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation, the hope is that further examination of the vehicle and its surroundings will help provide more clarity on what happened to Yekaterina Belaya that day.
The case also highlights the importance of community and private sector involvement in solving long-unsolved cases, as well as the ongoing need for public awareness in the search for missing individuals. For Belaya’s family, the long road to answers has finally reached a conclusion, but the quest for full understanding of her death continues.
