Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Wednesday night in Ventura County, California, according to the California Highway Patrol and booking records confirmed by multiple outlets.

The 44-year-old pop star was stopped by CHP around 9:30 p.m. in Westlake Village, not far from her home.

She was transported to a hospital following the stop, not due to injuries, but to have her blood drawn to determine blood alcohol content, per TMZ. She was booked by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department around 3 a.m. Thursday and released around 6 a.m. Her vehicle was towed.

Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for Spears told CNN. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”

The representative added that her sons and loved ones plan to put together “an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

Following the arrest, Spears appeared to deactivate her Instagram account, where she regularly posts dance videos and personal updates.

The arrest comes weeks after Spears secured a permanent restraining order against a Louisiana man who allegedly stalked and harassed her online for years before trespassing at her Southern California home in 2025. It also follows a reported $200 million sale of her music catalog to publisher Primary Wave.

Spears was previously charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run in 2007, which was later dismissed after she paid for damages. The following year she was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation, after which her father, Jamie Spears, was granted conservatorship over her life and finances.

That conservatorship lasted 13 years before being terminated in 2021.
