Pop star Christina Aguilera appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” this week, where the host asked her about her complicated friendship with Britney Spears amid the upcoming release of the latter’s memoir “The Woman In Me.”

The singer appeared apprehensive about what Spears could say about her in the memoir, but still wished Spears the best in her healing journey amid the recent end of her conservatorship and ongoing divorce proceedings from Sam Asghari.

Aguilera appeared apprehensive about the possibility of being mentioned in the memoir. The pair of pop stars were first united on “Mickey Mouse Club,” alongside fellow future stars Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, and Kerri Russell. While both went on to become pop icons in their own right, the music industry and their fans alike continued to pit them against one another.

The women famously had words over a comment Aguilera once made about Spears at 2003 MTV VMA rehearsals. She referred to Spears as “a lost little girl, someone who desperately needs guidance.” In response, Spears told Blender that she couldn’t “believe [Aguilera] said that about me,” and alleged that Aguilera once attempted to kiss her at a club.

“I say, ‘It’s good to see you,’ and she goes, ‘Well, you’re not being real with me.’ I was like, ‘Well, Christina, what’s your definition of real? Going up to girls and kissing them after you haven’t seen them for two years?” said Spears at the time. Allegations of a feud were further fueled when Aguilera then told Us Weekly, “I know Britney. She’s not trailer trash, but she sure acts that way.”

Aguilera and Spears’ Friendship

In the decades since the harsh comments, Spears was placed under a restrictive conservatorship by her parents following a manic episode that led to her bipolar disorder diagnosis shortly after. Spears alleged that she was forced to perform, maintain an IUD as a form of birth control, and had restricted access to her two sons, who she shares with ex husband Kevin Federline.

The arrangement ended in 2021, largely due to the public outcry regarding Spears’ lack of freedom from both her fans and celebrities alike. Despite their past differences, Aguilera shared a message of support for Spears at the time of the court date that determined her freedom. In this week’s interview with Kimmel, the singer quipped that she hoped Spears’ life was “beautiful now.”

Social Media Reactions

Some applauded Aguilera’s simple yet positive reaction to hearing the singer’s name in the interview. Regardless of their complex history, some felt it was mature of Aguilera to continue to wish Spears well.

Others found it suspicious that the singer appeared nervous for what the memoir could reveal.

Spears’ memoir, “The Woman In Me”, drops Oct. 24.
