The trailer premiered on March 17, 2026, with the film set to hit theaters and IMAX on Dec. 18. The threequel is adapted from Frank Herbert’s “Dune Messiah” and picks up 17 years after the events of “Part Two.”
Villeneuve debuted the footage at an AMC theater event in Los Angeles the day after the Oscars, joined by Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson. Timothee Chalamet, who returns as Paul Atreides, introduced the event via a pre-recorded video message.

The teaser shows Paul grappling with the fallout of his rise to emperor, now locked in a holy war and navigating the collapse of his relationship with Chani (Zendaya) after marrying Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) for political gain. Pattinson plays the film’s antagonist, Scytale, a shape-shifting villain whose loyalties remain ambiguous.

Villeneuve described the tone as a significant shift from its predecessors, calling it more action-packed and tense than the first two installments. He also called it his most personal film to date.
The cast also includes Jason Momoa, whose character Duncan Idaho returns despite dying in the first film, along with Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and newcomer Isaach de Bankole. Production began in July 2025 and wrapped in November.
Much of the film was shot on 65mm and IMAX film, a first for Villeneuve, though desert sequences were captured digitally. The director said the film is still in post-production but called it “alive” and on track for its December release.
“Dune: Part Three” opens Dec. 18 in theaters and IMAX. It will go head to head with Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday” during the holiday corridor.
