Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has reportedly been sleeping on the floor of his government office located just steps from the White House. According to two Republican sources close to Musk, he has been working out of an office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB), a key part of the White House compound, since taking on his role as head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The EEOB, which houses various offices and agencies within the Executive Office of the President, is situated directly across from the West Wing and is often used by senior government officials. Musk, 53, has reportedly been spending long hours at his office, with one source telling PEOPLE that the entrepreneur has been “holed up” in his office space, sometimes sleeping on a couch and at other times on the floor.
The EEOB is equipped with various amenities, including a cafeteria and a bowling alley, but the source explained that it’s not uncommon for high-level officials in Washington to sleep in their offices, noting that some members of the U.S. House of Representatives have been known to sleep in their offices and use the gym facilities for showers.
Musk’s office space is reportedly not just a place of work but also a temporary home. One source revealed that Musk’s 4-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii, whom he shares with musician Grimes, is often seen in the office, although it remains unclear if the young boy also sleeps there. X Æ A-Xii made a public appearance alongside Musk and former President Donald Trump at an Oval Office press conference on February 11, 2025. During the event, the child grabbed at his father and made faces at reporters, creating a light-hearted moment during the formal proceedings.
A second source confirmed to PEOPLE that Musk has indeed been sleeping on the floor when in Washington, D.C. However, the source also clarified that when Musk and Trump travel to Florida, Musk stays at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. Other sources familiar with Musk’s activities in Palm Beach have previously reported that the Tesla CEO resided at least part-time at Mar-a-Lago during the transition period after the presidential election and before President Trump’s inauguration, assisting with the White House transition.
Musk’s unorthodox living arrangements are not new to those familiar with his lifestyle. As the richest person in the world, Musk has long been known for his intense work ethic and untraditional approach to personal life. In 2020, Musk made headlines for revealing that he had lived in a small, prefabricated home at Tesla’s Fremont factory. Musk mentioned in a 2018 interview with CBS This Morning’s Gayle King that he slept in various locations around the factory, including on a couch, under his desk, and even in a tent on the factory’s roof.
