Elon Musk’s daughter signed a petition to be issued a new birth certificate, a recognition of change of gender, and to change her name. She wishes to change her name to Vivian Jenna Wilson. Wilson, who is transgender, wishes to not only change her birth certificate but also wishes to have no ties to her father, a billionaire Elon Musk and take the former surname of her mother, Justine Musk. Although she wishes to file these changes to correct her gender identity, she also expressed how little she wants to do with her father.

When listing the reason for her name change, she says “Gender identity and the fact that I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape, or form.” In 2020, Musk came under fire from many online, including from his girlfriend at the time and mother of two of his children Grimes, after tweeting “pronouns suck.” He also tweeted a meme mocking pronouns in December as well. When receiving hate, he said, “all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare.” He followed it with a link saying his company, Tesla, scored a “100/100” four years in a row when it comes to LGBT equality.

Vivian has not commented on the extent of her relationship with her father, but after the offensive tweets in 2020 and his recent expression of voting Republican for the first time ever, many could not blame her for not wanting to have ties with him. On Father’s day, Musk tweeted that he loves “all my kids so much.” However, with people now knowing that Musk has a transgender child, many felt the recent transphobic and right-leaning comments were much worse, given the context.
