A new Haunted Mansion is officially on the way from Disney. The original 2003 film The Haunted Mansion starred Eddie Murphy, Marsha Thomason, Terrence Stamp, Wallace Shawn, and others. The film rapidly became a family-friendly horror-comedy classic, and even inspired an immersive experience ride at Disney World. The new rendition of the movie is set to star numerous acclaimed actors, including Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Dan Levy, Hasan Minhaj, and more.

Though Disney’s latest spinoffs, sequels and remakes have not always been met with praise, fans on Twitter are mostly excited about this announcement. Curtis has specifically found herself in the spotlight lately, as she is generating a lot of Oscar buzz over her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once. She received her first ever Oscar nomination for best supporting actress this year.

The film’s ensemble cast features a blend of dramatic and comedic actors. The trailer depicts a scene reminiscent from the 2003 film–Dawson’s character and her young son move into the infamous mansion, and quickly realize that it may be worse than just a fixer-upper.

Some were quick to bring up a popular photo of the film’s screenwriter, Katie Dippold, that went viral several years ago. The resurfaced photo has Twitter users saying that she’s just the right person for the job.

While many are happy with the 2023 cast, and the new film following the tradition of the original by casting Black actors in its leading roles, some feel that Eddie Murphy’s absence will be felt.

While the overall aesthetic of the teaser was praised, some feel that the film may be too dimly lit. Some Twitter users joked that they could barely see anything.

One film critic revealed that a Guillermo del Toro led Haunted Mansion was in development for years, only for this version to be picked up instead. The 2023 film was directed by Justin Simien, who is known for his films Dear White People and Bad Hair.

It remains unclear if the film is intended to be a spinoff of its 2003 predecessor or a remake. Due to Murphy’s absence from the project, many fans are assuming the latter.

Winona Ryder is listed as a cast member on IMdB, but notably did not appear in the teaser. Fans are hoping she appears more in the film. Ryder is a veteran of spooky movies, as she notably appeared in Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Bram Stroker’s Dracula.

While the 2023 film will likely have several plot and technical differences, fans of the original are hoping for a few hints of the original film–from zombie details to the soundtrack.

Haunted Mansion promo will be haunting social media until its July 2023 release.
