  • “Everything is terrible but my cousin’s 9-year old daughter Alice has been quietly and masterfully slaying the @NewYorker’s caption contest and it’s pure delight,” said Bess Kalb, and it’s a very accurate description of the masterful, funny and beautifully strange work on display here. At first you’re amazed by the cuteness and precociousness of it all — as Bess describes, her cousin’s 9-year-old quietly takes her mom’s New Yorker’s, fills out the captions under the infamous New Yorker cartoons, and then returns the magazines quietly where they belong. Then, when you read the word, you’re blown away at the incredible humanity of the captions.

  • A bird asking a mouse wearing wings if it’s feeling okay is incredible. A man holding a giant remote in a store saying: “If you want a remote, get this one” brilliantly underscore the art. This 9-year-old is going places. Sure, right now it’s just school, but someday it will be the offices of the New Yorker, writing absolute poetry in the guise of captions. Bless.
