Helena Bonham Carter has departed “The White Lotus” Season 4 just over a week into production, HBO confirmed Thursday.
The two-time Oscar nominee was announced as part of the Season 4 ensemble in January. After the cast assembled in France and cameras started rolling, the network says her role isn’t working as written.
“With filming just underway on Season 4 of ‘The White Lotus,’ it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” HBO said in a statement first reported by Deadline. “The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks.”
HBO added that the network, producers, and creator Mike White are “saddened” they won’t work with Bonham Carter on the project, calling her a “legendary actress” they hope to collaborate with in the future.
Sources told Deadline that White, who writes and directs every episode of the anthology series, decided the character, as originally conceived, needed reworking after watching Bonham Carter shoot her first scenes. The role is reportedly central to the season’s story, prompting the rewrite.
Filming is continuing while the script is revised and HBO searches for a replacement. Because “The White Lotus” shoots with its full cast in a single location for the duration of the season, the production has flexibility to absorb the change.

Season 4 takes place along the Côte d’Azur during the Cannes Film Festival. The Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez serves as the fictional White Lotus du Cap, with the Hôtel Martinez standing in for the White Lotus Cannes. The shoot will also visit Monaco and Paris.
The remaining ensemble includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani and Nadia Tereszkiewicz, among others.
Bonham Carter’s exit follows another notable Season 4 shake-up. Composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, who won Emmys for the show’s title themes, told The New York Times earlier this month that he is not returning, citing creative differences with White.
A premiere date for Season 4 has not been announced.
