Swedish electropop duo Icona Pop, composed of Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, recently returned with their much anticipated follow up to their 2013 album “This Is…Icona Pop.” The new album, “Club Romantech”, dropped September 1, following a sparkling performance at the Streamys.

The duo performed their song “Fall In Love” from the new album at the 2023 awards show. The Swedish duo took the stage at the digital culture centered event after finding their music at the center of a number of significant pop culture moments over the years.

Icona Pop caught up with What’s Trending about everything new and old listeners can expect on their new album. “Our listeners can expect a very clubby world on this album, and lyrically a lot of honesty. We talk about a lot of love situations. There are bittersweet melodies, and awesome electronic productions,” said Hjelt.

This year’s ceremony served as the awards’ 13th ceremony. The show was hosted by 16-time nominee and seven time winner MatPat, the creator of the Game Theorists. The awards ceremony was dubbed “a crystal ball of culture” by Forbes, and serves as a reflection of the ever evolving nature of digital culture. Once covering primarily YouTube creators, the show has since expanded to include creators from numerous platforms.

The “I Love It” Effect

The duo first hit international audiences when their smash hit “I Love It” featuring fellow pop star Charli XCX was featured in a number of popular programs. The carefree kiss off track appeared in pivotal scenes in HBO’s “Girls” and the CW’s “The Vampire Diaries.” The track describes the emotional ups and downs of a life altering breakup.

Shortly after their international breakthrough, the duo found themselves opening for the likes of Marina and The Diamonds, the now split One Direction,  Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. While the duo continued to release several singles that received popular film features, including “We Got The World” in “Pitch Perfect 2”, the pair refrained from dropping a full length album until this year.

After a brief hiatus to begin new motherhood, the duo were back at it creatively. The pair of longtime friends and collaborators worked to channel all of the brutally honest electro pop of their 2010s “I Love It” with a contemporary twist.

“I Love It” has recently found viral fame on TikTok, where creators shared nostalgic videos about 2010s pop culture and their healing journeys post-breakup.
