Smosh, one of the most influential channels in the online entertainment world, has undergone significant transformation since its inception. For Courtney Miller, a key figure in the Smosh team, the evolution of the channel has been a remarkable journey, marked by growth, adaptation, and innovation.
When Courtney first joined Smosh, the channel was a dominant force in the YouTube landscape. Back then, it was backed by substantial resources, allowing for high-budget and ambitious projects. “When I first started at Smosh, it was under this – what appeared to be – big company with all of this money behind it,” Courtney recalls. “High-budget and high-concept projects were happening all the time, and Smosh was the #4 top channel. I felt like we were on top of the world.” This period was characterized by a sense of unbridled success and optimism.
However, as the digital media environment evolved, so did Smosh. According to Courtney, the current era represents an entirely new level for the channel. “We are making my favorite content to date, and all in the best environment I’ve ever experienced,” she notes. This shift reflects a broader trend in digital content creation where adapting to changing viewer preferences and platform dynamics becomes essential.
Throughout her time with Smosh, Courtney has accumulated numerous cherished memories. One standout moment was the team’s first Streamy Award for Best Live Show. “It was the first time I felt like Smosh was being truly recognized for our hard work in that newer era of the internet,” she explains. The accolade was a significant milestone, validating the team’s efforts and creativity.
Another highlight for Courtney is the annual VidCon event. “It’s my favorite way to connect with our audience, and re-grounds me every year,” she says. VidCon serves as a reminder of the impact Smosh has on its fans, offering a personal connection that underscores why she does what she does. “The job of being a YouTuber has changed in a lot of ways over the years, but the way we connect has remained the same.”
Courtney also reminisces about a memorable shoot, directing “The Funeral Roast of the Try Guys.” The project was a high point, providing a perfect blend of excellent performance and camaraderie. “Everything was just going so well, and everyone was performing so incredibly, and having a good time… that I had this moment where it hit me – ‘This is what it’s all about,’” she reflects.
Despite the highs, being a frequent on-camera personality comes with its challenges. Courtney admits that negative feedback can be particularly tough. “When someone doesn’t like your performance in a video, it can sometimes feel like a personal attack on who you are as a human,” she explains. To navigate this, she emphasizes the importance of maintaining perspective and focusing on the positive impact she aims to have. “I have to take comments with a grain of salt, always,” she says, underscoring her commitment to spreading joy despite occasional criticism.

Working within an ensemble cast presents its own set of challenges. “I’ve got so much respect for people who can naturally find a rhythm within a large group,” Courtney notes. She credits much of her growth to her colleagues Amanda, Chanse, and Angela, who have been instrumental in fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. “I prefer working in groups over being alone any day, and though it’s not for everyone, I think it’s a very useful skill to have in work and life!” she adds.
Looking ahead, Courtney is excited about future projects. As a Creative Director, she is particularly enthusiastic about working on themed trailers and promotional content. “I’m so excited to continue working on bigger projects,” she says, hinting at upcoming series and content that fans can look forward to. “I can’t wait for our audience to see what we’re filming this week in preparation for a new series.”
As both a cast member and producer, Courtney is optimistic about deepening her connection with the Smosh audience. “I think the SMOSH audience and I are about to become a lot closer!” she concludes, reflecting her enthusiasm for the future.
