Jimmy Fallon, Ariana Grande, and Megan Thee Stallion have shared a new pandemic-themed holiday song called “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” that debuted on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Earlier on Monday, Fallon teased the pandemic-themed song on social media, writing on Instagram and Twitter, “Guys. I can’t believe I’m typing this but – I’m dropping a new single and video tonight with @ArianaGrande and @theestallion.”
Guys. I can’t believe I’m typing this but – I’m dropping a new single and video tonight with @ArianaGrande and @theestallion. Midnight EST. Pre-save: https://t.co/2g7oR5l4Tu #ItWasAMaskedChristmas

Fallon sings about covering noses and mouths and only getting Wi-Fi for Zoom calls from the laundry room, while Meg raps about rubbing hand sanitizer on everything: including the Turkey and the egg nog. Despite the satire and the push for citizens to get the booster shot this season, the song stays confident in its holiday cheer with a roaring fireplace in a cozy cabin, chunky white knitwear, and skiing.

While this is Meg Thee Stallion’s first foray into holiday music, Grande has previously recorded multiple holiday tracks, including “Santa Tell Me,” which was first released in 2014. Fallon, meanwhile, is no stranger to the holiday tunes. In 2017, he covered Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” welcoming back the former Beatle along with The Roots on the track; and in 2010, Fallon released the song “Drunk on Christmas,” which featured John Rich.
With or without experience in dabbling in holiday music, these three managed to successfully make a holiday song that’s educational, hilarious, and festive all at once.

The song goes on to recount how last December fell flat for many of us, with family gatherings only possible via Zoom as travel was limited and large get-togethers were strongly advised against. Then Megan Thee Stallion cuts in for her verse, dressed as a frontline healthcare worker to reiterate the importance of taking precautions when seeing loved ones this holiday.
“Last Christmas we stayed in our house / covered our nose / covered our mouths,” sings a heavily autotuned Fallon in the opening verse. “But it’s Christmas time / we’ll be in line / for a booster.”
@camille.brooke im so confused by this ngl but im here for it #arianagrande #megantheestallion #jimmyfallon #itwasamaskedchristmas
And while I’m pretty sure this TikTok user had the same reaction as all of us when we first heard the song, it’s almost impossible not to love it. Fallon was able to create a project with three major celebrities, two of which are some of the biggest pop/rap stars out right now. And while this is clearly humorous for the sake of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, I personally, would love to hear the album.
