Kat Von D, a tattoo artist known for her gothic aesthetic, discusses going through major life changes and throwing away items she does not “align” with anymore, as she puts it in a post on a recent post on Instagram. This comes as a shock to many, as many of the books she was throwing away were about the Wiccan lifestyle, practicing witchcraft, and tarot cards. As she acknowledges, “I’ve always found beauty in the macabre,” so it was surprising to many to see her let go of these certain belongings.

This is not the first time she has made lifestyle changes, like selling her shares in her beauty brand, covering tattoos, and closing her notorious tattoo shop. Still, many people were surprised to see this type of change. According to her, “the truth is, I just don’t want to invite any of these things into our family’s lives, even if it comes disguised in beautiful covers, collecting dust on my shelves.” She says she has  “come to some pretty meaningful realizations — many of them revolving around the fact that I got a lot of things wrong in my past.”

She makes it clear she does not judge anyone interested in the macabre or in things she does not find herself connected to, writing “In no way is this post designed to put anyone down if you’re into this stuff, because I think we are all on our own journey, and I love everyone regardless of where they might be at. But right now, it’s never been more clear to me that there is a spiritual battle taking place, and I want to surround myself and my family with love and light.”

Still, some could not help but wonder what this would mean for her transformation to come. Although Von D never mentions religion, especially Christianity, some wondered if this was where the change was coming from. “Kat von D throwing out all her occult and magick and witchcraft books and items, saying they “bring demonic energy” to “bring love and light into her life” is… giving me Born Again Christian energy,” one person noted on Twitter. Other people were very supportive of her, however, one person on Instagram commented “You be you. We change and evolve, that’s how life works. Best to you on your journey!”
