A verdict has been reached in the high-profile trial of 10 suspects involved in the 2016 armed robbery of Kim Kardashian. On May 23, eight of the defendants were found guilty in a French court for their roles in the incident, during which Kardashian was held at gunpoint and robbed of millions of dollars in jewelry.

The trial, which took place at the Palais de Justice in Paris, brought to a close a years-long investigation into one of the most widely publicized celebrity crimes of the past decade.

Kardashian Reacts to the Verdict

Following the announcement, Kardashian, 44, released a statement to PEOPLE expressing her relief and gratitude.

“The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family,” she said. “While I’ll never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all. I remain committed to advocating for justice and promoting a fair legal system.”

Kardashian also thanked French authorities for pursuing the case and ensuring justice was served. Her attorneys, Michael Rhodes, Léonor Hennerick, and Jonathan Mattou, echoed her sentiments in a joint statement.

“It has been a long journey from that terrible night back in 2016 to her standing courageously in a historic Paris courtroom to confront these criminals,” the statement read. “She looks forward to putting this tragic episode behind her, as she continues working to improve the criminal justice system on behalf of victims, the innocent, and the incarcerated seeking to redeem themselves.”

Sentences and Public Response

According to CNN, although the eight suspects were found guilty, all of them will walk free due to time already served. Judge David De Pas described the sentences as “quite lenient” and emphasized the emotional and psychological harm caused by the crime.

“You have caused harm, even if you did not strike, if blood has not been shed, you have caused fear,” De Pas told the defendants.

The ruling closes a traumatic chapter for Kardashian, who has previously opened up about the long-term emotional effects of the robbery.

Inside the 2016 Robbery

The robbery occurred during Paris Fashion Week in October 2016. Kardashian was staying at a private luxury residence when armed intruders disguised as police officers gained access. They held her at gunpoint, tied her up, and stole an estimated $10 million in jewelry, including a $4 million engagement ring.

In her testimony delivered on May 13, Kardashian told jurors that she feared for her life throughout the ordeal.

“I absolutely did think I was gonna die,” she said, according to the BBC. She told the court she pleaded with the robbers, saying she needed to return home to her children. One of the assailants reportedly told her to “shut up,” heightening her fear.

Kardashian also testified that she believed she was going to be raped during the robbery, an emotional revelation that underscored the trauma she endured.

A Personal Mission for Justice Reform

In recent years, Kardashian has become increasingly involved in criminal justice reform. This trial marked a significant moment not only in her personal journey but also in her public advocacy work. She has consistently expressed a desire to support victims and push for fair treatment across the legal system.

A source close to Kardashian told PEOPLE before the trial that the SKIMS founder was determined to testify in person. “Kim’s a bit nervous,” the source said. “This is her choice. She was terrified for her life during the robbery. She wants the people involved convicted.”

Now that the verdict has been delivered, Kardashian appears focused on moving forward, while continuing her work in legal reform and public advocacy.
