Hulu has greenlit a pilot for the multi-camera comedy “Mid-Century Modern,” a project that brings together the creative forces behind “Will & Grace” and Ryan Murphy productions, promising a star-studded cast. Written by David Kohan and Max Mutchnick of “Will & Grace” fame, the series has already attracted top-tier talent including Matt Bomer, Nathan Lane, and Linda Lavin. Ryan Murphy serves as an executive producer, with James Burrows slated to direct.

The premise of “Mid-Century Modern” centers around three best friends, all gay men of a certain age, who decide to live together in Palm Springs after an unexpected death. The wealthiest among them, Bunny Schneiderman (played by Nathan Lane), resides with his mother Sybil (played by Linda Lavin) and a Gen Z housekeeper who is described as frequently naked. Together, they form a chosen family navigating the challenges of their golden years, offering each other support and humor along the way.

In describing the characters, Bomer’s role as Jerry Frank is portrayed as “pure of heart, hard of body and soft of head,” highlighting a dynamic mix of traits that promise comedic depth. The casting for the third friend and the Gen Z housekeeper remains to be announced.

Matt Bomer, known for his roles in “White Collar” and recent appearances in Murphy’s productions like “American Horror Story” and “The Normal Heart,” brings a wealth of experience to the ensemble. His previous collaboration with Kohan and Mutchnick during the “Will & Grace” revival underscores his familiarity with their comedic sensibilities.

Nathan Lane, set to portray Dominick Dunne in Murphy’s upcoming Netflix anthology “Monster,” has received acclaim for his recent work, including Emmy nominations for his guest role in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Linda Lavin, known for her roles in “Alice” and recent appearances in CBS’ “Elsbeth” and “B Positive,” adds her seasoned talent to the mix.

The pilot for “Mid-Century Modern” marks a collaboration between 20th Television and Hulu, with Murphy, Kohan, Mutchnick, Lane, Bomer, and Burrows all serving as executive producers. The project promises to blend the comedic prowess of Kohan and Mutchnick’s writing with the seasoned direction of Burrows, known for his work on iconic sitcoms.
