Are young women ever safe, even on college campuses?

TW: Talk of rape, sexual abuse, and assault

During the very first week of classes a 17-year old girl, on August 24, is sexually assaulted by a member of the FIJI fraternity also known as Phi Gamma Delta. His name, Max Helm.

From then on, there have been viral videos on TikTok of students protesting the fraternity itself to be removed and for Max Helm to be held responsible for his actions against this young girl. Reportedly, Max Helm raped the 17-year old girl during a party held at the University of Nebraska- London campus. Leaving her to fend for herself, bloody and naked on the campus lawn. The young girl is now in a hospital getting the right care she needs.

College campuses are frequent places where rape and sexual assault happens, where it is meant to be a place for new beginnings and finding out who you are as a person. Instead, according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), “13% of all students experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation (among all graduate and undergraduate students).”

Years of Rape and Sexual Assault Allegations

Since this is not the first incident of rape and sexual assault allegations against this fraternity and even against Max Helm, people wanted justice to be served.

Throughout many years, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has had multiple allegations against them. Young girls are being raped and sexually assaulted. Being left for dead on the campus lawn bloody and naked. More than 140 cases have been reported in the last five years. Multiple investigations have gone into these cases, where it has been said it has been dealt with but merely brushed under the rug or some never even looked at.

This particular incident was the tip of the iceberg that led to a spiral of multiple protests and rallies. Where the students and loved ones of the survivors demand change. Change in order to protect young women from this fraternity. A petition of more than 456,000 signatures has been signed and continues to be signed to have FIJI removed from the UNL campus for good.
