McDonald’s has announced a significant change to its popular McFlurry frozen treat, revealing a redesigned cup and a new size option. Starting Sept. 10, the fast-food giant will replace the McFlurry’s traditional plastic lid with a new “four-flap” cup. This change is part of McDonald’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
In addition to the new cup design, McDonald’s will introduce a Mini McFlurry to its menu. The Mini McFlurry will be available alongside the regular size and can be ordered through the McDonald’s app or McDelivery starting on Sept. 10.
“The Mini McFlurry is heading to participating U.S. restaurants nationwide and will be available on the McDonald’s App and via McDelivery starting Sept. 10,” a statement from McDonald’s USA said. “Got a friend who always wants ‘just a bite’? Instead of grabbing an extra spoon, you can grab them a Mini McFlurry of their own. Or maybe you’re looking for a quick afternoon pick-me-up… the Mini McFlurry is perfect for you, too,” the statement added.
The redesigned McFlurry cup will also be used for the new Mini McFlurry. This new packaging is part of McDonald’s broader effort to reduce its environmental impact. In October 2023, the company eliminated its distinctive McFlurry spoons, which had become a point of confusion for some customers who mistook the spoon’s hollow shape for a straw. The spoons were originally designed to mix toppings into the McFlurry.
The updated spoon features a smaller design made from less plastic. McDonald’s stated that this change is aimed at reducing single-use plastic waste.
The new packaging and spoon designs follow other recent updates to the McFlurry lineup. In July 2024, McDonald’s introduced a new McFlurry flavor: Kit Kat Banana Split. This limited-time treat combines vanilla soft serve with real banana bits, strawberry clusters, and Kit Kat pieces for a candy-infused experience.
Earlier in the year, McDonald’s also launched the Grandma McFlurry in May. This flavor featured vanilla soft serve with “delicious syrup,” crunchy candy pieces, and a nostalgic touch, described by the company as reminiscent of “grandma’s favorite treat that she hid in her purse.” The Grandma McFlurry was positioned as a sweet tribute, just like a grandmother’s affection.

In addition to these flavors, McDonald’s released several other McFlurry varieties throughout the year. The Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry debuted in April 2023, followed by the Peanut Butter Crunch McFlurry in August 2023.
These updates reflect McDonald’s ongoing efforts to innovate its menu offerings while also advancing its sustainability initiatives. The introduction of the Mini McFlurry and new packaging demonstrates the company’s dedication to enhancing the customer experience and reducing environmental impact.
