Disney released the first feature length trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin, and the audience is split! Half of them seem to be experiencing a pained missing of childhood that is impossible to satisfy because the past has moved on (and whatnot), and the other half is just horrified by that darned CGI Tigger looking old and faded. Still, even the likes of director Kevin Smith could not contain their excitement for the movie.

The trailer seems to concern itself with the old plot that movies like Spielberg’s Hook trod as well — could this character from a children’s story enjoy this universe as much now that he’s a gosh darned adult? Much like Robin Williams’ Peter Pan had to befriend The Lost Boys all over again, can Christopher Robin and Piglet re-spark that same ol’ magic? Who knows, but I know this trailer looks so odd and touching that I am absolutely ready to find out.
Ewan McGregor plays adult Christopher Robin, with a mix between celebrities and the official Disney cast of the Winnie the Pooh franchise voicing the stuffed animals you’ve all come here to see. Sure, you can stop and listen to Dr. Who’s Peter Capaldi as Rabbit, and Captain America’s Toby Jones as Owl, but then you also have Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, an actor who’s been voicing those roles since 1988. Marc Forster is directing, and the movie is set to be released on August 3rd later this year. Here is the intro to “The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” where Cummings made his first appearance as the character.
The movie is part of a slew of live action adaptations of animated movies which have come and gone, with even more projects yet to come. We’ve had Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, Jon Favreau’s “Beauty and the Beast”, Kenneth Brannagh’s “Cinderella” and Bill Condon’s “Beauty and the Beast”, with an adaptation of “The Lion King” with Donald Glover as Simba, and a “Dumbo” directed by Tim Burton on the way.
