Meek Mill to Be Released From Prison
Following a controversial, possibly racially charged arrest, Meek Mill is set to be released from prison today, on April 24th, 2018.
Meek Mill was arrested while on an extended probation and got demerits for not giving his parole officer his travel plans, and was sent to an etiquette class for his “threatening language”. Meek Mill was arrested for taking an Instagram photo with a gun that his lawyers claimed was just a prop, and many are saying the charges were drummed up and would not have been the same for a white person.
What’s more, Meek Mill’s case had a variety of constitutional violations, including Mill not receiving transcripts of his own case, and questionable behavior from the judge including — showing up to Mill’s community service, making him write a BoyzIIMen song (and dedicating it to the judge) and firing his managers only to replace them with the judge’s friends.
It’s this evidence, plus evidence of a corrupt police officer being a key element in Meek Mill’s case, which led prosecutors to dismiss Meek Mill without bail, with sixty days to decide whether or not to throw the case out completely. As of today, Meek Mill is out of prison and a free man.
Meek Mill made this statement to TMZ —
“I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation including JAY-Z, Desiree Perez, my good friend Michael Rubin, my fans, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time.”
“While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive.”
“To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice – not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct. Although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues. In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career.”
We congratulate Meek Mill and mourn that his case was treated so terribly.
