Margot Robbie is just a Barbie girl living in a Barbie world. This is a great way to begin an article about Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie signing on to play Barbie on the big screen. Mattel and Warner Brothers are partnering to bring the famous doll to the big screen, a Robbie is set to portray the character in the live-action film. Margot Robbie will also be co-producing the film.

Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group said: “Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.”

So what does a modern audience need to enjoy a character whose descriptor is essentially “doll shaped like a woman”? The movie comes as Mattel has been working to keep the Barbie brand alive and relevant. One way the brand has been doing this recently is through motivational YouTube videos where Barbie inspires young girls.

This is a part of the reason Robbie is excited to play the role. “Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery,” she said. “Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide.”

The casting news comes just two years after it was announced Amy Schumer would play the role of Barbie. Schumer reportedly had to drop out of the role due to scheduling conflicts. Anne Hathaway was initially picked to replace Schumer, but dropped the role as well after the release date was pushed back.
