Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed an executive order Tuesday creating the Illinois Artificial Intelligence Cabinet, an advisory group that will study the risks AI poses to residents and recommend safeguards.
Executive Order 2026-07 gives the state a formal body to plan for AI-related incidents while federal regulation stays largely off the table.
The cabinet will draw on experts in academia, law, ethics and governance, working alongside leaders from the Department of Innovation and Technology, the Department of Public Health and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
Members haven’t been named. Pritzker’s office says that announcement comes in the next few weeks.
Its agenda is broad. The group will look at protecting public systems like water, education and information networks, and it’ll weigh whether data center incentives or approvals should depend on a company meeting safety and transparency standards, according to Capitol News Illinois. Grid strain from data centers is on the list too, along with whether current law gives the state enough leverage to hold AI companies accountable when they cause harm.
The unpaid group will develop policy proposals through 2027.

Pritzker framed the order as a response to warnings from inside the tech industry and slow movement in Washington. “Illinois won’t wait,” he said in a statement, urging Congress and the White House to treat AI risks with more urgency.
The move builds on Senate Bill 315, the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, which Pritzker signed in July. That law raises transparency and accountability requirements for the largest AI developers, those bringing in more than $500 million a year.
