Reese Witherspoon is eager to reassure fans that Big Little Lies Season 3 is actively in development, offering insights into how the new installment may differ from its predecessors. The beloved HBO series, which concluded its second season over five years ago, is generating renewed excitement among its cast and viewers alike.

In an interview with E! News on October 5, Witherspoon, provided an update on the series’ status. Both she and co-star Nicole Kidman, 57, have hinted at the show’s return, following Kidman’s unintentional revelation last November that sparked speculation about a third season. Witherspoon stated, “Nicole and I have been waiting. We’re in waiting for Liane Moriarty,” referring to the author of the book series upon which the show is based. “She’s going to be turning in something very soon. We’re back to the original author and we’re going to go back to the original characters.”

The anticipation surrounding Season 3 is palpable, as Witherspoon teased the possibilities for the upcoming season, particularly regarding the passage of time for the characters known as the Monterey Five. This group includes Witherspoon’s character Madeline, Kidman’s Celeste, Shailene Woodley’s Jane, Laura Dern’s Renata, and Zoë Kravitz’s Bonnie.

Witherspoon suggested that the children of the Monterey Five are now older, which could introduce new dynamics to the storyline. “I think the kids are probably a little bit older now, so that might add another element,” she explained, reflecting on the evolution of the characters since the show’s last season. However, she clarified that concrete plans are still pending, saying, “I don’t know yet, I haven’t read it yet.”

One of the actors who portrayed one of the Monterey Five’s children, Iain Armitage, has already expressed his enthusiasm for a potential return. The young actor, who played Ziggy Chapman in the series, spoke about his hopes during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark in May. “I have not heard anything fully officially yet, but when such incredible, intelligent people as our leading ladies start talking, I think it’s pretty hard not to listen,” Armitage noted. “I’d be honored to be back.”

The journey to this point has not been without its humorous moments. Witherspoon recounted how Kidman’s casual comment about a third season led to a flurry of inquiries from the cast. “Then I get the call, the ‘ring, ring,’ like, ‘Hey, is that happening?'” Witherspoon recalled in a video for Vanity Fair, noting that her phone was bombarded with calls from co-stars, including Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley, all seeking clarification on the status of the project.

Kravitz, 35, also shared her eagerness for the new season during a conversation with PEOPLE. “I’m waiting to see, like everybody else, the third season that’s happening,” she stated, expressing her anticipation for the scripts. “Waiting by the phone, waiting for the script to be done.” Despite knowing little about what the new season holds, she conveyed her excitement to be involved.
