This morning, Taylor Swift announced that the music video for “Lavender Haze” from her latest album  Midnights will be released, in accordance with the theme, at midnight. The announcement came at the exact same time as John Mayer’s upcoming tour announcement. The purple visuals for the video have some fans thinking she may announce the re-recording of Speak Now, which she released shortly after her relationship with Mayer.

Speak Now famously features the seething soft country-rock track “Dear John”, which has long been speculated to be about their relationship. Mayer is 13 years older than Swift, and the pair dated when she was only 19 years old and relatively new to the music industry. Fan speculation has also led many to believe that her song “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” looks at the relationship from a rearview perspective, in which Swift details the emotional trauma that the situation left her with. Fans on TikTok have expressed how much it has helped them process the trauma of age gap relationships.

The music video coinciding with Mayer’s tour announcement has people talking. Swift is known for dropping easter eggs in music videos, which makes the purple “Lavender Haze” theory translating to a Speak Now re-record not beyond the realm of disbelief. Fans shared memes about the much anticipated music video on Twitter.

Others point out that 23-year-old indie folk artist Lizzy McAlpine is slated to open for part of John Mayer’s tour. McAlpine and Mayer both attended Berklee College of Music before ultimately leaving the college to pursue professional careers. Both artists tend to produce guitar driven music with intricately written lyrics. This shared background and style could be what led to McAlpine joining the tour, as the pair also collaborated on a song called “Never Gonna Be Alone” alongside acclaimed singer-songwriter Jacob Collier. Swift’s fans were wary of history repeating itself, as Mayer’s relationship with a much younger Taylor Swift began under similar circumstances. Several of McAlpine’s songs, including “Ceilings”, have amassed her a large fanbase on TikTok and beyond.

A recent video of Swift performing a duet of smash hit “You’re So Vain” alongside acclaimed singer-songwriter Carly Simon on her Red tour has recently made the rounds on TikTok. Swift was featured in a small video package honoring Simon ahead of her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The performance was strategic, as Mayer had sued Taylor Swift for using his name in “Dear John”, and the lawsuit was dismissed. Simon’s 70s classic famously belts “I bet you think this song is about you, don’t you?”

The pattern of strategic announcement echoes the release of Miley Cyrus’ latest single, “Flowers,” which dropped on Cyrus’ ex husband Liam Hemsworth’s birthday. The song details her self love journey following their divorce.

Shakira also jumped on the moving-on train with the strong lyrics about the power she gained after leaving her longtime relationship with former Barca and Manchester United footballer Gerard Pique. She alleges that Pique cheated on her and committed tax fraud in “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” In the song, she wishes him the best with who she calls her “replacement.” Pique debuted his new girlfriend, 23 year old Clara Chia Marti, a PR student who is employed by Pique’s events production company, Kosmos, on Instagram.

Fans on social media are loving the attention to detail of it all–and even more so, that celebrities are normalizing taking back their narratives.

“Lavender Haze”, which allegedly describes her current six-year relationship with actor Joe Alwyn, drops tonight at midnight. Fans will likely “Speak Now” about the many easter eggs the video is sure to feature.
