Instagram’s newest innovation, Threads, a text-based app most comparable to Twitter, is entering a traditional social media sphere–awards show announcements. The platform partnered with the Streamy Awards to announce the 2023 nominees in the Lifestyle, Beauty, and Breakout Creator categories.
TikTok creator Jake Shane was a part of the announcement process, posting brief videos announcing each respective category. Shane himself was nominated for Breakout Creator, alongside emerging household names Drew Afualo, Dylan Mulvaney, and Alix Earle. Shane was recently named “TikTok’s favorite comedian” by Rolling Stone.

The 2023 Streamys will serve as the awards’ 13th ceremony. The show will be hosted by 16-time nominee and seven time winner MatPat, the creator of the Game Theorists. The awards ceremony was dubbed “a crystal ball of culture” by Forbes, and serves as a reflection of the ever evolving nature of digital culture. Once covering primarily YouTube creators, the show has since expanded to include creators from numerous platforms.
Threads Of Thought
Instagram and Threads users were quick to react to the nominations for some of their favorite digital creators. Many of those nominated in breakout categories continue to engage in further projects and community initiatives, notably Alix Earle’s scholarship at the University of Miami, Dylan Mulvaney’s continued LGBTQ+ advocacy work, and Drew Afualo’s podcast on misogyny on the internet, “The Comment Section With Drew Afualo.”
Threads has continued to explode since the launch of the app as of late. The platform has nearly 300 million active users as of this time.
Elsewhere, the podcast category provided an interesting selection of nominees.

Some were disappointed to not see their favorite podcasts receive one of the coveted nominations at the Streamys in this category, but fans of the H3 podcast were excited to cheer on their favorite team. H3 is hosted by Ethan and Hila Klein.
Amid the historic announcement, Threads continues to see rapid growth as a social media platform. Millions of users flocked to sign up upon its launch several weeks ago. Threads emerged months after billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk purchased Twitter. Twitter previously held the spot as the only text-based legacy social media brand, and following a series of controversial policy changes, many users dropped from the platform.
Enter Meta with Threads. The competitor text-based platform offers more protections against hate speech than Musk’s Twitter, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirming that more Threads features are in the works. The Streamys will be held on August 27, 2023, and will be hosted by MatPat. Updates on the awards show can be found via Threads here.
Threads recently launched a “Following” feed option and translations for users on the platform. Since the launch of Threads, the Instagram team has been listening to community feedback and is working as quickly as possible to deliver new updates to improve people’s experience.

- “For you” / “Following” feed: Your feed on Threads allows you to view posts from other profiles, with two options:
- For you is a view of your Threads feed that includes a mix of posts from profiles you’ve chosen to follow and recommended accounts.
- Following will only show posts from people you follow in chronological order.
- Translations: Threads posts in feed are translated automatically based on the language they’re written in and the language settings of the person viewing it.
- If you see a thread in a different language, and your language is available as a translation, you can tap the translation button at the bottom right of the post or reply to see it.
Additional features in this update include: new categories to sort your Activity feed so you can filter by Follows, Quotes and Reposts, a Follow button on your followers list to easily follow other accounts back, the ability to see posts you’ve liked in your settings and the option for private accounts to batch “approve all” follow requests.
Many users have been requesting additional features of Mark Zuckerberg, to which he has been responding on platform to.
Adam Mosseri has also been creating video content surrounding the latest Threads updates.
Threads is set to roll out additional updates that may hit before the Streamys Awards on August 27th.
