A viral video from Emily, or @emily.the.recruiter, went viral after breaking down the notion of a “dream job.” Stitching another video, where another creator asks how to find a job you love if nothing interests you, she says you should find a full-time job that you tolerate and your full-time job is your hobbies and joys. The creator definitely sparked a debate online, with over 11 thousand comments, as people discuss what a job should look like and what happiness in your career actually looks like.

In the video, she says that “you pick a job that you tolerate and that will pay the bills and you don’t make that the center point of your life.” She continues that the job is there to help pay the bills and support the life you want to live, but does not have to be something that actively makes you happy. In our culture, we are often told that if you find a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life, but many believe that is untrue.

But, not everyone was seeing eye to eye with Emily, as one person commented “Working 40-44 hours a week plus commuting, getting ready, being tired af, not being able to sleep, prepping meals. Yea no, life revolves around work.” Many agreed with this sentiment, and it is relatable as many feel burned out and overwhelmed by their job. Emily agreed with these comments, even making another video explaining how capitalism and hustle culture has set us up to fail with the 40-hour workweek. She stressed that in order to combat this, you must maintain strong boundaries with work about your time off the clock and overbooking yourself.

Other people did not agree as they thought she should just find a better job and that dream jobs are out there, but others agreed with her main point and the fact that life should not be surrounded by our work, even if we enjoy our job and work.
