Jean Phil, a shadowboxing “gentleman” in a brown suit and blond bob, exploded across Instagram and TikTok in September, gaining hundreds of thousands of followers in a matter of days.
The character isn’t real: he’s an AI-generated influencer, made possible by new tools that can drop an AI character into the movements of real video footage. His bio links to a website promoting JEANPHIL, a meme coin it describes as “the token he launched himself,” which had a market cap of about $5.7 million as of Oct. 8, with only around $367,000 in liquidity.
As critics call the project a pump-and-dump, the backlash has sparked a bigger debate over whether platforms like Instagram should ban AI influencers.
