Wendy Williams is speaking out about her current situation in a treatment facility, revealing her thoughts on her health, treatment, and ongoing guardianship. This marks the former TV host’s first public interview since a bombshell Lifetime documentary aired in February 2024, shortly after her team announced her diagnosis of progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

In the interview, which aired on The Breakfast Club on January 12, 2024, Williams, 60, called in from her treatment facility to speak with hosts DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God, and guest host Loren LoRosa. A source confirmed to PEOPLE that Williams is currently residing in a luxury care facility, receiving around-the-clock medical attention.

Williams, who is best known for her years as a radio host and the outspoken star of The Wendy Williams Show, discussed her frustration with being placed on daily medication without clear explanations from her healthcare providers. “I’ve had two pills my whole life. There are seven pills now, and I have no idea what they’re for,” Williams said, expressing confusion about the medication regimen she’s been prescribed. “I haven’t been to a pill person in a matter of a long time… ‘Excuse me doctor, can you tell me what this pill is for?’”

Wendy Williams Voices Frustration Over Guardianship and Health Care

Williams’ recent comments shed light on her ongoing struggle within the healthcare and legal systems. Since 2022, she has been under a court-ordered guardianship after financial institution Wells Fargo froze her accounts, citing concerns about her mental capacity. A court-appointed guardian, New York lawyer Sabrina Morrissey, was named to oversee Williams’ legal and financial affairs.

Williams has since expressed her dissatisfaction with the guardianship, calling it an unjust and broken system. “Listen, this system is broken, this system that I’m in,” Williams said during the interview. “This system has falsified a lot.”

The controversial guardianship has led to a strained relationship between Williams and her family. Last year, her sister, Wanda Finnie, spoke out against the guardianship, claiming that it caused a breakdown in family communication. According to a source close to the family, all contact between Williams and her relatives was cut off after the guardianship was put in place. In fact, as recently as last summer, the Williams family told PEOPLE that they had been largely denied contact with Wendy due to ongoing litigation.

Guardianship and Legal Struggles

The guardianship was established following concerns raised by Wells Fargo and Williams’ financial adviser, who claimed that Williams was “unsound of mind.” This prompted the appointment of Sabrina Morrissey as her legal guardian, a move that has been met with significant public scrutiny. Last November, Morrissey filed court documents alleging that Williams was cognitively impaired, permanently disabled, and legally incapacitated due to the progression of her dementia diagnosis.

While the guardianship remains in place, Wendy Williams maintains that she is not mentally impaired, and she feels trapped in the system. In her Breakfast Club interview, she insisted, “I’m not cognitively impaired,” and stated that she feels like she is “in prison.”

Wendy’s Family Speaks Out

During the interview, Williams’ niece, Alex Finnie, also joined the call and gave a powerful statement about her aunt’s current situation. “This is the reality. This has been our lives. But specifically her life,” Alex said. “She can call us, but we can’t call her. That’s been the reality since 2023.”

Alex went on to describe her experience visiting Williams in October 2023, noting the heavy security measures and the difficulty she faced simply gaining access to see her aunt. “That room she is sitting in, she’s there every day, all hours of the day, every week, every month. She’s not getting proper sunlight,” Alex said, highlighting the emotional toll the guardianship and lack of contact have had on the family. “I went to New York in October to visit her, and the level of security and the level of questions that there were… it was absolutely just horrible.”

Wendy Williams Reflects on Her Past

Throughout the interview, Williams also reflected on her past career, including her years on television. She admitted that much of her time on air was driven by financial pressures. “Being on TV was about the money,” she confessed, acknowledging the role that financial motivations played in her public persona and media career.

As for her current financial situation, Williams disclosed that she now has only $15 to her name, a far cry from her previous financial success. Despite these challenges, Williams seemed determined to regain control of her life and health. “This is my life,” she said, emphasizing that she is focused on navigating the complexities of her diagnosis and guardianship.
