Wendy Williams made a surprising phone call to The View on Friday, marking her first public interview since a welfare check prompted her removal from her Manhattan-assisted living facility earlier this week. The former daytime TV host, who has been living under the supervision of a court-appointed guardian due to a diagnosis of dementia and aphasia since 2023, addressed her health and the situation that led to her recent hospitalization.

On Tuesday, Williams was escorted out of the facility and transported to a New York hospital for evaluation. She claims she voluntarily requested an independent evaluation of her cognitive health while at the hospital, where she underwent a cognitive test and reportedly passed. Williams explained during her phone call with The View that she also had blood drawn to check her thyroid. According to the star, she decided to visit the hospital to “get a breath of fresh air” and check in with her doctors. “I needed to see the doctors, so that’s why I went to the hospital,” Williams said.

Williams, who has been living at the assisted living facility under a guardianship since 2022, detailed her frustrations with the current situation. She explained that while at the hospital, she opted for the independent cognitive evaluation as she disagrees with claims that she is incapacitated. “They say I have incapacitation… I do not,” she firmly stated during the interview.

The former Wendy Williams Show host then shifted the conversation to her ongoing displeasure with her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey. Williams, who was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), claims that Morrissey has too much control over her life and placed her in a “memory ward” at the facility, where the other patients are much older and, according to Williams, suffer from severe memory issues—something she insists she does not have.

Williams became increasingly emotional during the interview, and her speech turned more disjointed as she expressed frustration with both Morrissey and the judge who made the decision to assign her a guardian. “I don’t want Sabrina [Morrissey], period,” Williams declared. “I need them… with my knees, you know, get off my neck!” Her emotional outburst, which veered into a broader critique of her guardianship situation, caused The View hosts to proceed quickly to a commercial break.

After the break, the segment continued with a conversation featuring Ginalisa Monterroso, an advocate from Connect Care Advisory Group who has been helping Williams navigate her healthcare and guardianship challenges. Monterroso explained that the guardianship was initially triggered in 2022 when Wells Fargo froze Williams’ bank account due to suspicious activity. The financial institution then initiated court proceedings that led to Williams being placed under a guardianship, which she initially agreed to in order to address financial concerns.

However, as Monterroso explained, the situation evolved into a much more restrictive arrangement than Williams had expected. “It was fine when it was just about getting the finances together,” Monterroso said. “What ended up happening was Wendy didn’t realize that this person was going to take her whole entire life.”

As the interview continued, Williams returned to the phone and spoke more coherently, though she did occasionally slip in her language. When asked about her previous struggles with addiction, Williams responded by sharing that she is currently living mostly sober. “Looking forward, my relationship [with drugs and alcohol] is fine,” she said. “And it’s wonderful because I’ve had my devices, and I have to tell you something: I’m easily going on with my life alcohol-free.” However, she did admit that she had celebrated her birthday last year with alcohol, but it was a rare occurrence.

The interview concluded with a lighter moment when the hosts asked about Williams’ iconic purple chair, a trademark of her time as a talk show host. Williams reassured her fans that the chair would not be going anywhere. “When it comes out of storage, I’m keeping it with me for my life,” she said, leaving fans hopeful that the beloved host would be back in the public eye soon.

Following the interview, a statement from her guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, was read on air. In the statement, Morrissey defended the guardianship, noting that it was established by a judge who declared Williams legally incapacitated after her diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. The statement also asserted that Williams has not been kept from her family and is receiving “excellent medical care.”

As the situation continues to unfold, Williams’ supporters and fans are left wondering what the future holds for the former TV star. While she remains outspoken about her discontent with her current guardianship, it is clear that Williams is determined to reclaim control over her life and her health.
