Season 3 backlash hasn’t deterred ‘The White Lotus’ success, with plans for a refined, murder-filled Season 4 in France.
After three seasons of beachfront death and dysfunction, The White Lotus may be heading for more refined terrain. According to a Deadline exclusive, HBO and creator Mike White have locked in France as the primary setting for Season 4 of the acclaimed dark comedy anthology.
While HBO declined comment, sources say the network and White are scouting luxury Four Seasons properties across the country—including the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, the Hotel George V in Paris, and the Four Seasons Hotel Megève in the French Alps. HBO has an ongoing marketing partnership with the Four Seasons chain, which has served as the fictional “White Lotus” resort in each prior season.

No specific hotel has been confirmed, but the Cap-Ferrat, perched on the French Riviera near Cannes, is considered a strong contender. That location aligns most closely with previous seasons’ resort-style backdrops—Hawaii (Season 1), Sicily (Season 2), and Thailand (Season 3).
Still, sources note that The White Lotus has increasingly used multiple locations in a single season. Season 3, for instance, centered on the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui but also filmed at three non-Four Seasons properties.
“For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the crashing waves of rocks vernacular, but there’s always more room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels,” White said following Season 3.
That may explain the pivot to mainland France, though options like Megève—a popular ski destination—could be limited by seasonal weather. White has previously expressed a dislike of cold locations, and Megève would be under snow if filming begins before May. Paris, meanwhile, would offer a striking departure from the show’s typical coastal isolation, placing the drama in an urban setting that’s “very picturesque and romantic,” per Deadline.

Season 3, which aired earlier this year, received 23 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and solidified The White Lotus as a prestige juggernaut. But it wasn’t without backlash.
Critics raised questions about cultural appropriation and representation in the Thailand-set storyline, and some fans argued the show had grown formulaic. Even so, its viewership remained strong. Variety reported the show had grown its audience season over season, with millions tuning in weekly across platforms.
Deadline previously reported that the show was “likely” returning to Europe, and HBO and White had originally planned to scout in spring. That trip was delayed until summer, as White reportedly needed a breather post-Season 3.
