Tyler Oakley Raises Over $500,000 For The Trevor Project
Nearly two months ago YouTube sensation, Tyler Oakley, began his second annual birthday fundraiser for The Trevor Project resulting in over half a million raised for the non-profit using the online campaign site Prizeo.
As a leading voice of the LGBT community, Oakley has deep ties to The Trevor Project. In 2008, he made his first video about The Trevor Project, and the following year he interned for them at their Los Angeles headquarters. Then, in 2011, he co-hosted the the red carpet livestream for their annual gala fundraiser, Trevor Live, with What's Trending's host, Shira Lazar, and the two have reunited for the live show every year since.
So what exactly is The Trevor Project?
The Trevor Project was, "Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24" (thetrevorproject.org).
Everyday young people reach out to The Trevor Project’s multiple in-person and online life-saving, life-affirming resources: Trevor Lifeline, TrevorChat, TrevorSpace, Ask Trevor and Trevor Education Workshops.
It's the help and support from people like Tyler Oakley that keep The Trevor Project running, and the $500,000+ he has raised this year will assist them with saving even more lives, as well as providing even more services for teens in need.
As a young gay male, I can recall countless times I would have benefitted from the help from an organization like The Trevor Project. So don't be afraid to speak up if a friend or member are going through troubled times, because sometimes all a person needs is a friend to talk to, and be sure to check out http://www.thetrevorproject.org
