Murdoch’s Fake Wife Gets Unverified on Twitter

  • On New Years Eve, as the online community was reveling and getting ready for the clock to strike midnight, sudden news hit the interwebs– News Corp. Chairman and CEO, Rupert Murdoch, had joined Twitter.

    Many questioned the legitimacy of the account, but it said “verified”, so it must be real. Thus far, no one at Twitter has said otherwise. Murdoch has been entertaining journalists since with his random and sometimes brash unfiltered comments about everything from Steve Jobs biography to the British having “too many holidays for broke country.” His account quickly grew to over 90,000 followers in just 3 days and is following Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and Zynga co-founder Marc Pincus among a few others. While many know his own Fox News Channel to have a political slant, who knew Murdoch would quickly use his Twitter platform to share his own political views.

  • Things got more interesting once an account that appeareed to be his wife, @Wendi_Deng popped up. The description said, “Joining my husband @rupertmurdoch in our new digital adventure on Twitter” and it was verified, so many assumed once again it was real. It was humorous to see the online quips between a couple many of us never see that side of. It actually somewhat humanized the pair. But alas, it didn’t last long. Today, Twitter Communications unverified the account and along with Murdoch’s firm, confirmed it was not real. Here are some of the reactions that followed:
