  • People around the world and on the web are honoring Human Trafficking Awareness Day, a nationwide day of action to free victims of the illegal trade of human beings for modern slavery, sexual exploitation or forced labor. And yes, this is actually taking place in our country. In fact, cases of human trafficking have been reported in all 50 states. According to the UN’s Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN-GIFT), some 2.5 million are working as laborers against their will each day. Fifty-six percent (1.4 million) of the globe’s human trafficking casualties come from Asia and the Pacific, while 10 percent (250,000) arise in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 9.2 percent (230,000) are in the Middle East and Northern Africa.
