  • LeBron James watched that famous episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air today called “Papa’s Got a Brand New Excuse,” which features the famous “why he don’t want me man” speech by Will Smith.

It’s one of the most well-delivered, personal and impactful moments in sitcom history and really hit home with a lot of people when it was first aired. Since then the moment has become a bit over-exposed, but when the LeBron James Instagram account posted the entire speech in four parts followed by the words “This hit home for me growing up and I couldn’t hold my tears in. Til this day they still coming out when this episode come on.”

This scene, though you’ve seen it before most likely, when watched through the perspective of one of the most famous figures in NBA history, changes context and seems like it’s coming from LeBron himself when presented in as personal a medium as Instagram.

Watch these scenes again for a look into how LeBron James feels about not only his father and his success, but one of the reasons he lives life the way he does.

And sure, I could have just embedded a YouTube video of this whole thing so you only had to click into it once, but there’s something about being there with him, with his phone pointed at the TV, cutting the speech into 15-second chunks, that makes it like you’re with him. And it really comes across as one of the most personal things I’ve ever seen any celebrity do on social media ever.
