  • It’s perfectly circular, wood backed, and less than 80 mm thick. It’s described by its creators as a “smart pocket watch.” It’s called the Runcible, and it’s the weirdest, most unique device to come out of the Mobile World Congress consumer electronics expo going on in Barcelona.

According to Monohm, the creators of the device, Runcible “is modeled on devices humans have carried around with them and loved for hundreds or thousands of years: the pocket watch, the compact, the compass, the magical stone in your hand.”

  • The device will run Firefox OS, and promises all the functions of a standard smartphone — calls, texts, emails, and web. But the creators hope the unique form and classic design will get users engaged with the real world more, and less glued to their screens. How exactly a circular mobile device is less engrossing than a regular phone remains to be seen. But the Runcible is definitely stylish, and the unique wood back has to count for something, right?

  • As you might expect from a niche, designer device like this, the Runcible won’t be cheap. But if you’re looking for a smartphone that will make a statement, this 21st century pocket watch may be for you.
