Have you ever been to a natural history museum and seen one of those “to scale” models of a blue whale’s heart, with the main artery so large that people can crawl through it?

Turns out that might be overstating things a bit – though don’t get me wrong, a blue whale’s heart is still huge.
In this fascinating, kind of gross video from PBS, Jacqueline Miller from the Royal Ontario Museum shows off a massive heart that was salvaged from a dead blue whale that washed ashore in Canada. Apparently it’s the largest heart that’s ever been preserved.
Scientists still don’t know a lot of things about a whale’s biology, so it was an amazing (if rather gory) opportunity to put things into perspective.
