  • It was no coincidence that Geri Halliwell (a.k.a. Ginger Spice) joined Twitter only last week. A big announcement was on its way, set to revive a beloved piece of ’90s pop culture.

Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), and Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) were already present on the social networking site. There was just one missing link.

This morning, the five gathered in London for the first time since their reunion tour in 2008 to announce a new musical called Viva Forever! that will include a score of Spice Girls hits.

According to the website, the musical’s plot will mirror the Spice Girls’ overnight success and struggles with fame and fortune:

As one girl follows her dreams, VIVA FOREVER! charts her journey into the world of overnight celebrity and its impact on her mother, and the friends she thought she’d have forever. From London to Spain and back again, as the world judges you, it’s all about who you really are and who you want to be, whatever the cost.

The Spice Girls broke into the pop music scene in 1996 with the hit “Wannabe” and quickly rose to stardom, selling more than 75 million albums worldwide before they split in 2000.

Directed by Paul Garrington, written by Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), and produced by Judy Craymer, producer of the hit ABBA musical Mamma Mia!, the new jukebox musical starts previews on November 27 and opens on December 11 at London’s Piccadilly Theatre.

“Spice Girls” has been trending Worldwide on Twitter all morning. According to Topsy.com, the band name was mentioned over 13,00o times in the past day and over 4,000 in the past two hours alone.

The Girls themselves took reunited on Twitter to express their excitement:
