The content creator, Jenna, goes by @miss_hall on TikTok, where she shows her day-to-day as a second-grade teacher. Her account, just like many teacher accounts on the app, is a good resource for new teachers to be introduced to the field. However, Jenna is also incredibly honest with her content and is quite open about the fact that she has to work a second job because she does not make enough as a teacher.

Jenna notes that she works night shifts at Starbucks since she teaches during the day. She shows the shift and details what she does at the coffee shop and even lets her followers know that she uses cake pops that are not sold during the day as a reward for her students. She notes she is a “second-grade teacher by day and a barista by night.” Of course, many found this to be heartbreaking, as many believe that teachers work too hard to be paid so incredibly low.
Jenna is not the only creator to show how draining being a teacher can be, as other creators have done so and been incredibly honest about the not-so-fun parts of being a teacher. However, this perspective was incredibly jarring to see, as many knew that teachers were not paid near as enough as they deserve, but many did not realize they are often not even paid living wages. Not only is Jenna open about this, in another video she opened up about overcrowding in her classroom. She discussed that though the admin told her she would not be receiving more students due to her class already being over capacity, they did not keep this promise.

Many note that this is why the teaching career is seeking so much help at the moment because teachers are not getting the help they need and that this issue was worsened with the COVID pandemic. Right now, it seems teachers are working harder than ever, but are not being paid as much they deserve and are not receiving help either. According to Forbes, one-in-four teachers work 60-plus hours a week. To many, this is unbelievable, but some are still unsure how this issue will be resolved since it is not an issue. Hopefully, these teachers on TikToks will continue to be vocal and honest about what is going on in their schools and it will open others’ eyes to the issue so that it can hopefully end, but many teachers are suspicious of this.
