Romy Mars, the sixteen year old daughter of acclaimed director and actress Sofia Coppola and Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars, briefly joined TikTok, and was incredibly self aware about her “nepo baby” status. Several members of the Coppola family are famous actors and filmmakers in their individual ways, with Romy Mars’ grandfather, Francis Ford Coppola, famously creating The Godfather film franchise.

Coppola senior has won five Academy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and several other international film accolades, while his daughter Sofia has won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Nomination. Other famous names in the family include fellow Academy Award winning actor Nicholas Cage, and brothers Jason and Robert Schwartzman, who appeared in notable films “Moonrise Kingdom” and “The Virgin Suicides”, respectively.

On Romy Mars’ paternal side, her father’s band won a Grammy award in 2010 for Best Alternative Album for “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”. Mars first met Coppola in 1999 when his band contributed music to her directorial debut film, “The Virgin Suicides.”

After months of an ongoing conversation surrounding the ethics of nepotism in the entertainment industry as a whole, Romy Mars revealed in a TikTok that her artistically acclaimed famous parents previously expressed that they wanted her to stay out of the discourse entirely. Commenters could understand where Coppola and Mars were coming from, after several self-described nepo babies have made controversial comments about their status.

Teenaged Romy Mars was simultaneously so self aware yet so far removed from the lives of the average teens of TikTok that her video amassed thousands of views before it was taken down. The video depicts Mars attempting to differentiate between garlic and onions while making a homemade meal with her babysitter, after being grounded by her parents for attempting to charter a helicopter to meet a friend for dinner.

Later in the video, she humorously holds up her father’s Grammy award while explaining why her parents don’t want her to be a nepo baby. Some viewers joked that she has a future in filmmaking like her mother based on the TikTok alone.

Others resurfaced a quote that Sofia Coppola gave regarding her decision to keep her children’s lives private. Coming from such a famous family in the film industry herself, she wanted her children to have more of a choice in their public lives and careers than she did.

Many were quick to defend the lighthearted nature of the TikTok video, reminiscing on the sneaky things they did as teenagers with lesser known parents.

Romy Mars appears to remain grounded at this time, but future TikToks may be to come.
